PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Mike鈥檚 Drive-In, founded in 1971 by Mike Martin, has been serving hamburgers and more for more than five decades. Todd Freeman, who started working at Mike鈥檚 Drive-In at age 14, purchased the business in 1983 and now operates four locations: North Portland, Oregon City, Tigard and Milwaukie.

The Milwaukie restaurant was hit by a car in 2023. That prompted an extensive renovation. Joseph Hughes Construction completely removed one exterior wall to repair structural damage. The building鈥檚 remaining parts 鈥� including all wires, switches, gas lines, HVAC equipment and more 鈥� were replaced. The redesigned space was optimized for efficiency and safety, and the original brand was refreshed. The restaurant gained a new outdoor canopy, new outdoor walk-up ordering space, access to more natural light in the interior, and a new commercial kitchen.

This was the second Mike鈥檚 Drive-In project performed by Joseph Hughes Construction recently. In late 2022, the company completed the transformation of a 2,000-square-foot former Subway restaurant in Tigard into a new Mike鈥檚 Drive-In. That project was also designed by Scott Edwards Architecture.
